In relation to the new regional regulations. (D.A. No. 2104/2025) as of June 25, 2025, Sicilian accommodation facilities: hotels, B&Bs, room rentals, etc. must observe mandatory requirements on mattresses to obtain or maintain the regional classification.
Specifically, the requirements are:
Mattresses
- Mandatory 1IM certification for each mattress
- Thickness/height of at least 22 cm
*Facilities already classified as of the date of the decree have 3 years to comply until June 26, 2028
Sofa Beds
- Allowed only with mattresses with a minimum height of 20 cm.
- Can only be used inside bedrooms (not in living rooms or kitchens)
Double rooms with single beds
Single mattresses cannot be used side by side unless:
- joined stably and fitted with toppers of at least 4 cm
- covered with mattress cover
- Equipped with a fastening system that locks them securely.
The new legislation in sisntesi
In summary, regional legislation in Sicily imposes new requirements on mattresses in tourist facilities:
- fire retardant in Class 1IM
- minimum thickness 22 cm
- 20 cm minimum thickness for sofa beds
- Use of toppers and fastening systems for single beds for double use
Adjustment checklist
- Check if your facility is already classified as of June 25, 2025
- If yes, it should be planned to be adjusted by June 26, 2028
- If you are in the process of opening or reclassification these requirements are mandatory from the outset to obtain classification
